With the advent of the Giclée process, pronounced (zhee-clay), the art of fine printing has become even more precise. Because no screens are used, the prints have a higher apparent resolution than lithographs. The dynamic color range is like serigraphy. In the giclée process, a fine stream of ink- more than four million droplets per second, is sprayed onto a specially treated canvas. The effect is similar to an airbrush technique but much finer. Exact calculations of hue, value and density direct the ink of 7 nozzles. This produces a combination of 512 chromatic changes, with over 3 million color possibilities of saturated, nontoxic waterbased ink. Mark Martensen's color approval and input are essential for creating the final custom setting for every one of his editions.

The latest advancements in the giclée process are the result of higher resolution machines, wider gamut light resistant inks and protective coatings for canvas art. The resolution ranges between 1440 dpi (dots per inch) and 2880 dpi, depending on the subject matter, rated to undergo no less than 25 to years of normal exposure to light without any measurable fading. Finally, each canvas is applied with a special UV coating varnish. This coating insures UV light protection and protects the surface from scratching and other normal hazards.
Mark's confidence in the giclée process has given him a new appreciation for his reproduction market, which allows his editions to capture the subtle variations which exist in his original paintings where other processes fall short. The highlights are brighter, contrasts are better defined, and the colors are more exact than any comparable reproduction process. With the exception of Mark's "Men of the Dust", you will notice that his edition quantities are less than most artists. His personal preference is to keep each edition exclusive enough to make every purchase, not only an attractive addition to any room, but a worthwhile investment as well.

| "Men of the Dust"
(As briefly mentioned above), this giclée edition release of Mark's famed "Men of the Dust", with it's unique sense of drama, has been released at a higher quantity, due to the lithograph edition of 1000 selling out. Mark, realizing the interest this piece has been surrounded with since the original sold in 1991, didn't want to underestimate it's availability, not only because of it's popularity, but also because of the giclée process being able to capture the true essence of the original.
